At the University Store, we have a flexible return policy to make your shopping experience convenient and easy. We want you to be completely satisfied with your purchase, but understand that sometimes an item needs to be returned or exchanged. No worries! We are happy to help.
Merchandise Returns And Refunds
NOTE: For textbook and courseware returns and exchanges, please reference the section below "Textbook Returns and Exchanges."

Returns/Exchanges to a Store
Please return the item in its original re-saleable condition with the sales receipt to the location of purchase (University Store or Cal Poly Downtown). Returns must be made within 30 days from the purchase date and be returned to the store of purchase in the original condition. The University Store or Cal Poly Downtown staff has discretion over all returnable items. Your refund will be credited to the account it was billed, unless you would like the refund issued as store credit.
Returns/Exchanges by Mail
If you want to return or exchange items via mail, we will process your exchanges and returns the next business day the item is received. You will be notified if our office encounters any problems with your return/exchange. The University Store or Cal Poly Downtown may extend the deadline for the online return of an online purchase. Merchandise can be exchanged or refunded as long as they are in its original resalable condition. Refunds will be issued with the same method you paid. For example, if you paid with a credit card, we'll issue a refund on your credit card. If we cannot credit the account for some reason, we will offer you a store credit for the refund amount on a store gift card.

Shipping Items for an EXCHANGE
If you plan to exchange an item, please enclose the following with your exchange:
- Item(s) with explanation of exchange.
- A copy of your customer invoice or order number (if applicable).
- Return street address and daytime phone number.
Shipping Items for a REFUND
If you would like to ship the item(s) back and receive a refund, please enclose the following:
- Item(s) with explanation of return (i.e. incorrect item ordered, garment did not fit, etc.)
- A copy of your customer invoice or order number (if applicable)
Your refund will be credited to the account it was billed unless you would like the refund issued as store credit. For your safety, please do not include credit card information with your return, as your information may be compromised if routed to an incorrect address or office.
Nonreturnable / Refundable Items
We do not accept returns or exchanges for the following items:
- Book notes (such as CliffsNotes)
- Calculators and other electronics
- Clearance merchandise or items marked as "non-returnable"
- Computers and peripherals
- Cal Poly Gift Cards
- Merchandise labeled as non-returnable
- Software in opened packaging
- Special orders
- Study aids (e.g., Quick Charts, Vis-Ed cards)
- Subject guides (e.g., Schaum's Outlines)
- Test tutors (e.g., SAT and GSAT)
- Defective Merchandise Policy
If an item you purchased is defective, you can exchange it or get a refund of the product. If the product is ineligible for a return, it is the University Store's discretion on whether you get an exchange or refund. Please make sure to have the original receipt for exchanges and/or returns on defective products. If the product is covered by a manufacturer's warranty, please refer to the manufacturer's terms. If you do not have the sales receipt, please contact the University Store Customer Service before attempting to return the product at (805) 756-5322.
Textbook Returns and Exchanges
Textbook Return Period
The return period for the textbook or courseware will be printed on a bookmark stapled to your sales receipt, on your receipt, on the University Store website (www.calpolystore.com) and is also posted in the University Store – please make sure to return or exchange the items within the specified period.
Used Textbook Return/Exchange Process
To return a used textbook or courseware, make sure you have your sales receipt and photo ID (preferably your PolyCard). We offer exchanges and returns on used textbooks, provided they are returned in resalable condition.
New Textbook Return/Exchange Process
If you are returning a new textbook or courseware item, make sure you have your sales receipt and photo ID (preferably your PolyCard). If you wish to get a full refund or exchange for the item, it needs to be in its original resalable condition. If the item appears used, you may be issued a refund or exchange for a used textbook or courseware item at our discretion.
Rental (both New and Used) Return Process
If you are returning a new textbook rental, and wish to get a full refund for the item, it must be in its original condition. If the item appears used, you will not receive a refund. If you are returning a used textbook rental, and wish to get a full refund for the item, it needs to be in resalable condition.
