Textbook Adoption Process

Watch this simple guide to learn how to order your textbooks or download the tutorial (pdf).

Create Customized Cal Poly Reader Coursepacks for your Classes

Oftentimes, the content you want for your classes isn't available through a textbook, and you would prefer a more customized approach. At the University Store, we can create custom coursepacks, called Cal Poly Readers, which include securing the necessary copyright service permissions to protect you and the university from copyright infringement.

How to Order Cal Poly Reader Coursepacks

If you would like to designate an existing cousepack for your upcoming classes, simply enter in CP Reader in the “Author" field. If any revisions are necessary, please note “Revised Coursepack" in the comments field, and we will contact you to discuss any revisions.

If you would like to create a new coursepack for your class, enter in CP Reader in the author field and “New Coursepack" in the comments field. Please keep in mind that the permission process can take up to six weeks.

How to Produce a New Cal Poly Reader Coursepack

Please follow these directions below:

  • Coursepack Layout Specifications: single-sided, 8.5" x 11", white paper
  • In-store submission: Print single sided pages and submit to the Courseware Service Desk at the University Store.
  • Online submission: Save file as a PDF and email to courseware@calpoly.edu.

Copyright Permission

Permission is required for each use of content from sources such as books, cartoons, Internet, journals, magazines, and newspapers. Please do not assume that fair use exempts a coursepack from copyright permissions.

For each copyright permission, we need:

  • Author or Editor
  • Title
  • Publisher
  • Page Numbers of Copies content
  • ISBN or ISSN
  • Estimated Enrollment

Or if appropriate:

  • Title of Article
  • Date or Volume
  • Website of Content Download
  • Estimated Enrollment

Please keep in mind that the permission process can take up to six weeks. You may give us the copyright information ahead of the coursepack original file. We will inform you of any permissions which are unusually costly or delayed.

E-Books/Digital Textbooks for Your Classes

You also have the option of providing e-book/digital versions of your textbooks for content that is available in this format. Digital textbooks allow students to easily read the content on their own computer or tablet, or even access the content through a website. Students can print out pages and take notes. Instead of purchasing the textbook, students purchase an access code or license key.

To find out if the textbooks you've assigned are available digitally, please contact the University Store Courseware Department at (805) 756-1171 or email courseware@calpoly.edu.
